Official Contest Rules

Only girls and adults (female or male) who are registered Girl Scout members, volunteers or employees may enter the Real Girls, Real Women Contest by nominating other people in Girl Scouting who make the world a better place through their courage, character, and confidence. When selecting nominees, look for:

  • Girls Scouts who work well with others, explore their talents and interests, and improve themselves by taking a positive attitude.
  • Girl Scout Alumnae who positively influence the world around them by using their knowledge, skills, and willingness to take well-reasoned risks in business or in life.
  • Volunteers or Employees (female or male) who make Girl Scouting a positive experience by focusing on the girls, being innovative and action-oriented, and working positively with others in Girl Scouting.

A. Categories of Nominees

(1)   Registered Girl Scouts in grades K-12 as of April 15, 2005. Only adult members, volunteers, and employees may submit nominations in this category.
(2)   Girl Scout Alumnae ages 18 and up as of April 15, 2005. Alumnae include women who were Girl Scouts at any time during their childhood or teen years and who are not registered adult Girl Scout volunteers or employees. All girl and adult members, volunteers, and employees may submit nominations in this category.
(3)   Registered Girl Scout Volunteers ages 18 and up as of April 15, 2005. All girl and adult members, volunteers, and employees may submit nominations in this category.
(4)   Registered Girl Scout Employees ages 18 and up as of April 15, 2005. All girl and adult members, volunteers, and employees may submit nominations in this category.

B. To Enter

Entries must be submitted through our online form and received by June 24, 2005 and include: (1) a true story of 200 words or less about the nominee’s courage, character, and confidence; and (2) a digital picture showing the nominee’s courage, character, and confidence in action in one of the following forms of technology: (a) digital photo, drawing, or image, or (b) a collage of digital photos, drawings, or images, or (c) a hyperlink to a password-protected web page with text, digital photos, drawings, images, and/or videos; * and (3) an Official Entry and Release Form completed by an adult. * Due to limited space on the computer server, a digital video may not be directly emailed to Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA).

An entrant may submit only one entry about a person, but may nominate many different people. Employees, volunteers, affiliates, or vendors of GSUSA are not responsible for lost, late, illegible, incomplete, altered, stolen, misdirected, or undelivered entries.

C. Evaluation Criteria and Judging

Entries will be evaluated on the basis and percentage values of: (a) creativity of the entrant (30%); (b) success in conveying the nominee’s courage, character and confidence (40%); and (c) originality in the digital picture of the nominee (30%). Five finalists in each of the four categories will be selected. Finalists will be notified by telephone, asked to be the subject of a film highlighting their accomplishments and publicized in connection with the Real Girls, Real Women Contest. GSUSA reserves the right to name additional finalists.

Winners from the five finalists in the categories of “Girl Scout” and “Girl Scout Alumnae” will be determined by online voting. Online voting will begin in August 2005 on www.RealGirlsRealWomen.org. Winners from the five finalists in the categories of “Girl Scout Volunteer” and “Girl Scout Employee” will be selected by a distinguished panel of persons not eligible to win. Winners for all categories will be announced at the 2005 GSUSA National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

D. Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to each entrant submitting the nomination of a winner. Prizes are non-transferable, and no substitution or cash equivalent of the prizes will be granted.

E. General Provisions

Entries will not be returned and become the sole and exclusive property of GSUSA. This contest is void where prohibited. An entrant in the Real Girls, Real Women Contest must be a legal resident of the United States. By submitting an entry, an entrant agrees to be bound by the Official Contest Rules of the Real Girls, Real Women Contest. GSUSA reserves the right to clarify or modify these rules at any time upon reasonable need. All decisions regarding the Real Girls, Real Women Contest and interpretations of these rules by GSUSA are final.
